Jimi Paradise intervista Greg Bailey

Q. Hi Greg, speak about your art: why did you start photographing and what do you like to photograph to?

A. After Leaving School I joined the local Art college to study fine art and fashion. I was kind of torn between the two. My Dad actually thought I should try merge the two subjects and the best way I could do that in my mind was Fashion photography. I just started shooting my friends really and took inspiration from my favorite magazines. I’ve tried shooting landscapes and stuff, but I just think people are so much more interesting to photograph.

Q. Your shots seems to celebrate muscles, beauty, eroticism: do you have a ideal of beauty itself?

A. Who dosen’t like a nice piece of muscle to look at right?! Really its just about the beauty in the shot rather than anything else. You could have a huge muscled Rugby player or a pale skinny guy in front of you, but if neither are comforatable in front of a camera then you won’t get a compelling shot regardless of their appearance. Eroticism just adds another dimension to the image but for me the beuty is within the trust that the model gives the photographer.

Q. I just seen  your new work DEATH and DUMB on your tumblr and... WOW! I love that kind of art, i think also male erection can be art as well! What can you say about that?

A. Thank you. Yeah that was a really fun shoot. It goes back to what I was saying about being comfortable in front of the camera. Death and Dumb has stuggled with body confidence for years and as the shoot progressed he became more comfortable with the situation and himself. This was so nice to watch. And after the shoot he said that it felt like a form of therpy. So that was great to hear. I definately agree with you about erections being shown within art. There is this amazing photographer called Erwin Olaf, he did this striking set of images of naked models with high end designer shopping bags on their heads, each model was semi aroused or fully erect. It was a really cool set of images.

Q. I'm so jealous! You worked with William Belli, for Idol Mag, Slick it Up, etc... So impressed: how old are you?

A.I’m twenty seven, going to be twenty eight in February. Willam was a blast to shoot and really I have to thank her so much. I contacted her never thinking I would get a response, but she did! She was the first of the RuPaul girls that I shot, if Willam hadn’t checked out my work and said yes then I may not of had the chance to be doing all the shoots i’m doing now. So from the bottom of my heart... Thank you so much Willam for starting the ball rolling, I love you like a big Schlong!

Q. You live in UK. Do you like your country? Is ok for your work?

A.Yeah I love the UK. I currently live in a city called Brighton, which is on the south coast of England. Its great being by the sea and so close to the British country side, but work wise you really need to be in London. Luckily its only an hour away by train, so i’ve been doing a lot of commuting recently.

Q. Nowadays what's the role and significance of photography? What's the point of shoting to the present day?

A. I think it’s the same as its always been, to capture a moment in time. Or to stage a moment in time. Either way its just about being creative and using it to experience new things and meet new people.

Q. Do you work for fashion? What do you think about fashion?

A. I love fashion and always will. After art college I went onto The London College of Fashion to study Styling and Photography. I love the creativity within the fashion world, but from the small glimpse that i’ve had into it I found it can feel quite elitest, but I suppose as a photographer you have the perfect excuse to dip in and out of all sections of the art world, get a glimpse of everything.

Q. Let's speak about art in general: do you have fav artists? Do you have inspiring people in your mind while working?

A.I love the classics such as Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon. And got to Love Terry Richardson, he’s the one and only fashion pornographer. I got to meet a huge inspiration to me this year and that is Mariano Vivanco. I was in a taxi with Jodie Harsh and Detox from drag race, on the way to Room Sevice London. When we arrived Mariano was there to say hi to Jodie, after a quick chat with Jodie he turned to me a shook my hand and asked me my name, what I did, the usual questions. I answered him but I had totally zoned out. The convosation had finished and he had started talking to someone else but I totally forgot to let go of his hand, I just held on! Oops!

Q. And what about technology: are we all photographer today?

A. No I don’t think so. We all have camera’s and we all take photographs, we’re not all photographers. I can use a sewing machine, but that doesn’t mean I am a designer.
